Following the disappointing announcement that the Scottish Software Awards would not run this year, the Open Source Awards have decided to press on. With a full and packed week for entrepreneurial and tech activity, Informatics Ventures is supporting this push.

The Open Source Awards got a fantastic reception for our talk at CloudCamp and offers of support and sponsorship from a number of parties.

The next few  days should see a number of key announcements including venue, awards dates and sponsorship.

We look forward to flying solo. Open Source is big enough now, has enough momentum and a large enough user base across the IT spectrum.

Open Source software pervades the Internet. It is responsible for running more Websites and delivering more email than any other software.

Open Source applications run the mission critical, highly secure operations for major corporations in finance, energy, communications and many other sectors.

Open Source has won the first battle. It is recognised as being more robust, more secure, more performant and less costly than proprietary competitors. Ask Sun Microsystems - they're building a business on it.

The next challenge for Open Source has already started - business applications such as CRM and ERP have emerged and have market adoption and momentum has started.

Yet few business people are aware what Open Source is.

The Scottish Open Source Awards is part of a strategy to promote the use of Open Source in Scotland and to reward those companies delivering Open Source excellence.
