As part of the Geometric respresentation theory and low-dimensional topology summer school and workshop, Daniel Freed (University of Texas, Austin) will give a public lecture entitled

Geometry From Afar

It sometimes happens that to solve a problem one is well-advised to ignore the trees and focus only on the forest. The branch of Geometry which studies certain large-scale features of shapes is Topology. In this talk we play with elementary examples, and then we illustrate how topological ideas developed internally in Mathematics play a role in contemporary Physics.

Doors Open: 5.40pm. Talk starts at 6pm.
The talk will be held on the ground floor of the Bayes Centre (Room G.03). All ticket holders are invited to a reception after the talk in the atrium of the Bayes Building.
